[edit] Installation

The installation files for the client are available here.

[edit] Please note: The certificate for the installation *.sis has expired! The workaround is as follows:

1.) Change your phone's date settings to one year in the past. 2.) Perform the installation proceedure. 3.) Re-boot your phone (take the battery out for at least 10 seconds) 4.) Turn the phone on, reset the date to the correct settings, and Bob's yer Uncle... 5.) Enjoy!

[edit] Installing from the PC

Open the Downloads page using your PC browser. If you have installed PC Suite, and your phone is connected to your PC, then the Application Installer should start when you click on the link to the .SIS file. Make sure you select the correct version for your phone.

If you do not use PC Suite, you can save the .SIS file to your PC, and use Bluetooth to transfer it to your phone.

You can also use http://tinyurl.com/24xf57 and http://tinyurl.com/2hnnq6 (mosh.nokia.com) to get the packages if links on the official site are broken.

[edit] Installing directly to your S60 phone

Open the Web browser on your phone, and point it to the Downloads page. Select the appropriate file links for your phone. For 3rd Edition phones, use the .SISx links. The browser should download and install the files directly to your phone.

[edit] Playlists

When the S60 Internet Radio application is installed, an example playlist (shoutcast.pls) will be installed to the \Shoutcast directory of the installation drive. You can try out the application with this sample of stations.

Please note: Stations that broadcast in AAC+ will not work on S60 2nd Edition phones.

Please note: If you cannot connect to a station, it is because the station cannot accept any more connections at the moment. Some of these stations are maintained by amateur broadcasters, who do not have much bandwidth at their disposal. Please try the station again later. This is not a problem with the Radio client. We have tested the client with all of the stations in the default playlist.

You can also create and install your own playlists for the Radio app to use. The Shoutcast plugin will search for playlists in the \Shoutcast directory of the device memory (C:) and the memory card (E:). Found playlist(s) will be automatically parsed and added to the playlist menu.

To create your own playlist, you can use Winamp (or another similar program) to import and modify the default playlist, or to create your own playlists of Shoutcast radio stations. Export the playlist to a .pls file, and copy one or more playlists to the Shoutcast directory in the C: or E: drive. In may cases, the easiest way to do this will be to use PC Suite to create a Shoutcast directory on your memory card (E:), and copy the playlist to this directory.

When you open the application, the stations in all playlists will be available for selection.

For example, here is another playlist that you can add to your device to see how this feature works.

[edit] Adding playlists to some E-Series phones

Some E-Series users are not able to add playlists to their E-Series phones (like the E61), because they can't reach the /Shoutcast directory on the device memory (C:) using PC Suite. One solution is documented here:

I installed the Internet radio client on my mini SD card so the shoutcast file is on my mini SD card. It is a folder called “shoutcast” and it contains the .PLS file. The folder is not in the application folder of the Internet radio.

Use the “File Manager” in your "Office" folder and do a search for the folder. You can search as one of the functions of file manager.

Also, On some phones, you can't go to c:\shoutcast directory from Nokia File Manager. You will need to use something like YBrowser (http://www.drjukka.com/YBrowser.html) for that. This is only applicable if you install this application in default phone memory.

[edit] Error messages

Florin contributed this information to the S60 Multimedia Blog:

Some of the mysteries of the error codes some of you have received are revealed at Forum Nokia:

Here's a short summary:

  • -5 means (probably) codec not supported
  • -13 means that the server was not accepting the HTTP request (probably it was not a standard Shoutcast server). Or maybe the proxy closed the connection.
  • -25: no idea, it depends on the context.
  • -28 means that the URL is malformed (the URL parser is not that smart to get parameters, and does not do DNS lookup of domain names. It works best with a URL pointing to an IP address, e.g.
    http://192.3.4.5:8000
    )
  • -33 means timeout. If you get this after some time, the phone can not contact/connect to the server.

Tip for debugging: If something does not work, try to create a folder: C:\Logs\Shoutcast You will get debug messages logged there, in a file called shoutcast.txt. If you want an answer to "why it does not work" it may help to also post the last few lines from this log file. However, if things work well, do not create the above folder because the file can grow pretty big and eat all the phone's memory.

[edit] Playing files

This Internet Radio application can also play your music files. Select Change Mode->File Player from the Options menu. You can now select files to play through Options->Open File->(directory on device).
