Open questions Internet Radio
From OpenSource
I have a Symbian serie 60 3rd edition phone and although these little devices with integrated bluetooth, headphone jack, wi-fi, 5mp cameras, dual core processors can be awesome in theory,, unfortunately their accessibility for blind users is still very limited in practice.
I don't know how accessibility of third party applications can be achieved, but out of 50 60 applications I tried, maybe 10 are reasonably usable with a mobile screen reader like Nuance Talks or Mobile Speak.
I know that Nokia Internet Radio is a open source project, It is a real pity that it is not accessible at all, whereas other Nokia applications like Nokia Energy Profiler or nokia Step Counter for example are quite usable. I suppose it is a question of choosing certain system libraries and fonts, I hope that someone could have a look at things like Nokia internet Radio and OGGplay, these apps are nice for sighted people, but, should they become blind friendly, they would be even more useful.
Whereas sighted people can even use the built-in browser to find something and than listen to a radio station, for us mobile surfing is still very premature and I dare say that les than 20% of internet content is usable, cliccable etc. Hence having a small accessible application like Nokia internet Radio would be great!
As an example, the nokia Podcasting application that comes with nokia n82 is totally accessible.
In the next few days I would like to raise a little awareness amongst Symbian open source developers for any current or new projects; and if anyone can help me in this awareness-raising challenge it would be more than appreciated by a large community or users. Some time people just don't know that some little adjustments might be very important... Like in oggplay, all the menus are accessible, but the file list on the main screen is mute... probably a font problem, or something with the skin interface, I don't know, but I think that it wouldn't be difficult to make something like a fexplorer interface for the file browsing part.
If by chance you know some people who might be interested in such ideas, maybe you can make them aware...
As blind I'm really happy that technology helps us a lot, but the increasing use of mobile devices, touch screens and menu-driven interfaces, with keyboards often disappearing all together, is a new huge challenge that we have to face... Now it is even difficult to find a microwave without a menu-driven interface... and hardware buttons are more and more becoming a thing of the past... But voice is not a thing "of the present"...
Thanks again and in advance for your help, you can contact me at ‘cguiducci AT tiscali.it’, and if I can be of any help for future accessibility efforts, I will be more than happy to support you.
Regards,
Cristian

[edit] Phone busy?
After installing on my E61 it works great but sets my phone to away so it wont ring and goes strait to voice mail is there a way to make it pause and let the call through? Cinap666@hotmail.com
[edit] Sound quality?
AAC+ streams work on my phone (E65), but do not sound as they should do (like on my computer), while the Mp3 streams sound exactly the same. Especially the high tones you can't hear and sometimes the stream is in mono (dancegroove 32K). It is the same difference with Dolby MP3Pro on your computer if you did'nt install the MP3Pro plugin. Am I missing a plugin or something?

[edit] Volume support?
It seems the volume button doesnt change the volume on the N95. is this a know problem? it streams fine but it very quiet, even if i change the volume from the media player?
[edit] WMA Streaming support
I have just installed the Internet Radio on my E60, been through the trouble of finding the shoutcast folder and now everything works fine. Except that my favorite danish radio station only support WMA formats. Do You have any plans extending the functionality to WMA?
Kind regards jeanbeol
[edit] E61 problems
I can't get this installed on my e61. I have told it to install all software, ignore certificates etc... It downloads the installer(.sis) and it says that it's not supported? Any idea would be helpful.
Thanks,
Adam

Oren (5 Jan 2007): There is a discussion of this problem in the E-Series Blog. Make sure, that you're downloading the 3rd Edition .sis file and not the 2nd Edition .sis file. If the .sis file does not work, try the .sisx file. You may have to download that to a desktop computer first.
September 3, 2007 - Unfortunately there is nothing on the E-Series Blog for this particular problem. I am also having the same issue and read all over that blog without luck trying everything suggested for all of the other issues as well without luck. You cannot install the Internet Radio files. Neither SIS nor SISX. They say "not supported". I've tried installing directly via the phone as well as using PC Suite. I've changed the date back over a year as well as have the certificate settings to All and Off. It seems there is yet another issue causing the files to not install. I've ensured that I've downloaded the S60 3rd Edition installation files. No luck. I've also posted the issue to the E-Series blog without a response.
Thank you, Sherri swyche@gmail.com
[edit] Err= -28
I am currently getting the -28 errors, which I understand is due to the url containing a domain and not being in the format of an IP address.
However the ShoutCast Stations which I listen to the most are in the format of "http://scfire-nyk0l-1.stream.aol.com:80/stream/" etc.
These are very popular stations and its disappointing that Internet Radio player is unable to play these ShoutCast Stations. Is there anyway around this? If not, will a future version of Internet Radio support dns domain lookup?
Thanks, lastrider04@gmail.com
Oren (5 Jan 2007): I know that this is a big problem with the application, but unfortunately we're not planning any future versions at the moment.
[edit] Certificate Expired
I am currently getting a "Certificate Expired" error when installing the software on my Nokia E61

[edit] Compatibility with Ampache and or Jinzora
Internet Radio won't open radio streams from either Ampache http://www.ampache.org/ or Jinzora http://www.jinzora.com/ Since no further releases are planned im sad. This would be so good, I could hear my music library directly from my home network (or anywhere from the internet) on my N-Series phone. No need to fill up my memory card, wait to transfer or other nuances. By the way, is this sort of functionality planned to be incorporated in any future N-Series phones ? This would be such a killer feature. Bye, Khairul :(
[edit] Feature Requests
Things I'd like to see included in future versions:
- Variable buffer size, user editable
- Ability to change the price factor per Mb
- Sleep/countdown timer - cut the stream or exit the app after a certain amount of minutes or Mb downloaded
Can anyone suggest any more? Potkettle 18:39, 4 December 2007 (EST)
[edit] E90 problems
I can install software and change settings but when I chose station and it starts connecting I have two options. 1) Cancel and phone crashes. 2) Wait and phone crashes.
[edit] Can't start the application on E90's main display
I've got S60 Internet Radio version 1.02 installed on my E90 and this version seems to have a small bug: the application can not be started when using E90's main display (the big one) - I always have to close the lid and use the small front display to start the application.
Once the application is running, then using the big screen causes no trouble, unless you consider it a problem that the application screen isn't scaled to size, but that's irrelevant to me. I'm just somewhat annoyed by not being able to start up the program without closing the lid first (I do pretty much everything with the big screen open, except phone calls).
